A Little Story about My Hair

(From officialkourtneyk.celebuzz.com)

A lot of you have been asking about hair products that I use. I absolutely LOVEFrédéric Fekkai products. I love their glossing shampoo and conditionerfor those days when your hair feels dull and needs a little shine. My hair is pretty fine, and I love volume, so whenever I am going out I use their Full Volume shampoo and conditioner. I use their Full Volume Moose if I blow dry my hair. It just makes it last longer and gives my hair a little lift. The glossing cream is great if my hair is dry. I only use a little drop and rub it from my ends up. My favorite hairspray is TextureLineTexture Spray Hold Firm by LOreal .

The History of Hair Extensions

History of Hair Extensions and Wigs

Ancient Wig of Human Hair

As far back as the time of the pharaoh's records and artifacts show that hair adornments were commonplace. For millennia long hair has been the hall mark of power and beautiful people.

Hair adornments have meandered in and out of fashion in every century since the time of Cleopatra and the pharaoh's on every continent. In the early 20th century well-to-do edwardian women wore false hair additions to create popular hair styles. This continued right up to the beginning of the 21st Century.

In the pre and post war years hair adornments slipped out of fashion in the mainstream until the emergence of Glam-Rock and celebrities like Debbie Harry in the 1970's, Bonnie Tyler in the 80's and of course the Spice Girls in the 90's whom all glamorised hair extensions.

When we emerged from the hair adornment lull of the early 1900's the fashion changed from wig wearing to hair extensions.

Hair Adournments Popularised

In the 2000's A-list celebrities switch and change (adorned) hair styles almost as frequently as their outfits.

From Tina Turner to Beyonce and Victoria Beckham, celebrities have made hair extensions so popular with the general public that today they are common place at home and in the salon. More recently global stars such as Cheryl Cole have served to keep the passion for hair extensions alive.

Q. How did Hair Extensions and Long hair Styles Become so Popular?

A. Unwittingly the mainstream media and the mega-brands have driven the passion for long hair. Think about it, practically every advertisement that is designed to sell a product or a service to a lady, or a sale that is influenced by a lady is done so by models with long hair!

The media do this because they know that long hair represents power and passion and is an aspirational look.

Celebrity Wigs

Sexy long hair sells products in a way that short hair styles cannot, the combined minds of the best people in advertising can't be wrong! Can they?

Q. Where Does all of the Human Hair Come from to Make Hair Extensions and Wigs?

A. Hair Farmers! Mainly in India and China

India. Tonsuring - the act Tonsuring or the of shaving of ones head completely bald with a razor is practiced by 10's of thousands of Indian (and other) women each year as an offering to God and or an act of effacing the ego before marriage.

The act of Tonsuring is organised by and is practiced in the temple, the temple then sells the hair on to the highest bidding "Hair Farmer". This hair is popularly called "Temple Hair" and is generally of very high quality.

China. In the 1050's and 60's during the cultural revolution Mau Tse Tung made women shave their heads, the hair was used in various industrial applications including the stuffing of mattresses, engine oil filters and even soldiers breast plates!

Following the revolution the abundance of long black asian hair found it's way to the African American beauty industry and was used quite in the same way as Cleopatra would have used it way back in history.

For many years "hair extending" remained strictly in the Afro hairdressing community until the early 90's when it was legitimised and glamorised by modern mainstream celebrities.

Human hair is not always given freely, often lower grade hair comes from mortuaries, prisons, salon clippings and "fallen hair" is collected from Chinese consumers who keep the hair left in the hairbrush and sell it to the "hair farmers"

Human Hair Route to Western Hair Extensions and Wig Market

Generally speaking the majority of the worlds Human Hair is processed in Chinese factories.

1. A batch of Human Hair ready to be "combed" and sized.

2. Measuring and Sorting.

3. Ready for Processing.

Ready for Processing

The hair you see in the examples above is a result of Tonsuring, hair freely donated to the temple as an offering to god and then sold to the hair farmer for processing and selling on to the manufacturers of Hair Extensions and Wigs.

Hair is a great source of personal pride to the Ladies who donate it to the temples, they generally grow it very long and look after it extremely well before sacrificing it to God ahead of their wedding day as a demonstration that they are willing to give up their vanity and offer themselves fully to God and their new husbands as well as asking for future health and happiness. This is what makes Indian Temple Remy Hair the best suited to manufacture premium hair extensions. Hair Growth

Hair growth starts since birth and will grow till old age. It is one of the most hard working part of your skin because it grows throughout your lifetime and hardly stops working.

Throughout the years, your hair is bombarded with chemicals from your shampoos, colorings, perms and conditioners. It faces wind and sun, sweat and pollution yet it still continues to grow. After a while, the hair follicle rests and then starts to produce a new hair follicle again. This is known as the hair growth cycle. Before you decide to start any hair loss treatment, it' s good to understand how your hair grows first to give yourself better perspective and options when choosing your treatments.

Getting to Know Your Hair

Before we start explaining the hair growth cycle, let' s take a look at the diagram below for a brief explanation of your hair.

Follicle Layout

Your hair follicle is a small complex organ which is a part of your skin. Some of the important parts are
  • Sebaceous gland
The sebaceous glands produces sebum, a kind of oily substance that is responsible for protecting your hair from
    • Becoming dry
    • Brittle and cracked
    • Inhibits growth of microorganism on the skin

However, the glands can overproduce sebum that can cause oily scalp. This is usually caused by factors like stress and DHT.

  • Blood and lymph vessels
The blood and lymph vessels are your energy and nutrient supply line to the skin and hair follicles. This supply will be disconnected from your hair follicle when it reaches the CATAGEN phase.
  • Arrector pilli muscle
The Arrector pilli muscle is attached to your hair follicle, this soft muscle is responsible for making your hair stands up when you have goose bumps. It also function by raising the hair to catch the heat to keep you warm. Stem cells are found in the junction of this muscle and your hair follicle and are responsible the ongoing hair production during the ANAGEN phase.

Indian Remy Hair Structure

Human hair extensions are the most popular. The hair used for your hair extension is for the greatest part responsible for your looks and the life span of your extension and is therefore of great importance. It is good to know some more about it before visiting a salon. There is a large variety of human hair used for hair extensions. When a poor hair quality is used your human hair extension can become a nightmare. It can result in dry, brittle hair that tangles constantly. When it comes to hair there are two basic sections, the human hair extension and the synthetic hair extension. On this page we explain more about the different types of human hair used for extensions.

Human Hair Structure (the cuticle)
Hair is made of different layers. The outer layer, called the "cuticle", is made up of overlapping layers of long cells. They lie on the surface aligned in the same direction like the tiles on a roof with their free edges directed towards the tip. The cuticle locks in essential moisture and protects the hair against outside elements. A healthy cuticle is much more than just a protective layer. Much of the shine is due to the cuticle, light reflects from their glossy surfaces. This, together with the pigment within the cortex, gives hair its characteristic appearance. Hair without cuticle would appear dull and lifeless, it would dry out and become brittle.

Human hair extensions

The human hair used in the hair extension industry comes in different qualities. In general we can say that we get what we pay for, the lower the price of your hair extension the less hair quality we can expect. The highest quality hair will still have all it's cuticle perfectly aligned in the same direction. If the cuticle scales are not facing the same direction, hair will interlock like Velcro, this will lead to matted and tangled hair.
Cheaper hair is very often placed in an acid bath which completely destroys the cuticle. To restore the shine this hair is covered with a silicon layer. It looks beautiful but after a few washes the silicon is removed and the hair matts, tangles, and becomes dry.

European human hair does not necessarily come from Europe. It is a group name for different hair with an almost similar structure. Indian hair, Latin American hair, European hair, the only exemptions are Asian hair and African hair (their structure is very different).
Typical European human hair is relatively thin and has an oval cross-section.
This is a popular hair type for a human hair extension.

Asian hair (mostly Chinese hair) is very often used for human hair extensions. This hair is thicker than European hair and has a round cross-section. It is dark black.
To prepare this hair for use in hair extensions it is usually made thinner (acid bath) and lighter. This hair is less expensive.

Indian hair has a very similar basic structure as European hair. In general this hair type is of a very high quality. However the method of collection is very essential. When different types of hair are mixed with cuticles aligned in different directions this hair becomes of a much less quality and therefore less expensive. To prevent tangling the cuticles must be removed and the hair is covered by silicon. Hair companies in Korea and Indonesia are specialized in this type of hair.
Collected in the right way with all the cuticles present and in the same direction this hair is one of the best hair types available for use in a human hair extension.

Remi hair is a name you will hear when you shop around for hair extensions. They claim to use only the finest and most beautiful human hair in the world with all cuticles in the same direction.

Synthetic hair is man-made fiber that is made to look like your own hair. It produces a different sheen than human hair, moves differently and therefore does not blend with human hair. New fibers are developed continuously that are better resistant to heat and have an appearance closer to human hair. It comes in a large variety of colors. This hair is the most inexpensive. Sometimes this hair is mixed with human hair and a combination is used for a human hair extension. In most cases this is of course not the way to do it. Both hair types need a different after care.

The majority of hair sold today is non-cuticle hair, which is less expensive. So if you want to spend less money on your hair extension this could be fine for you as long as you realize that this hair will probably start matting, tangling and become dry a lot sooner than a higher quality hair.

Overheating is one of your hair's biggest enemies, the damage can be as deep as the cortex which is in the middle. Be careful not to use too much heat when you use a blowdryer or curling iron. It is best to let your hair dry naturally.
Chemical treatments like color and perm can be harmful as well. Go to your stylist for advise, they should know what is best for your hair. Brush your hair gentle to prevent damage. This is not just better for your hair extensions but it will also keep your own hair healthier.

European and Indian Remi hair is the most popular for a human hair extension but also the most expensive.

How to care for Remy Extensions

Taking care of your hair extensions will not give you a lot of extra work. Here are just a few tips that will help to keep your extensions and your hair in a better condition.

First of all follow the instructions given to you by your stylist.

Washing: Keep your hair clean. Hair tangles when dirt and sweat build up, wash your hair after exercise, swimming etc. Brush your hair and remove all tangles before washing it. Wash your hair going in a downward motion. Use a good quality shampoo, your stylist can advise you what product is best for your hair. When lots of water is added at once to very dry hair, hair can swell up and tangle. Gradually wet the hair and brush gently before you completely wash it. This is more common with less expensive extension hair.

Styling: When brushing use a soft bristle brush, start at the ends of your hair and gently work your way up. Always brush in a downward motion. Do not brush harshly. Brush your hair 2 or 3 times a day. Heat is your one of your hair’s biggest enemy, the more you use it, the shorter your hair extensions will last. Be careful with the use of blowdryers and curling irons. It is best to let your hair dry naturally.

Exercise: Wear a cap when swimming or keep your hair out of the water. Chlorine and salt water can cause the hair to tangle and mat up. It is recommended to wear your hair up or in a ponytail when you swim or exercise

Sleeping: Never sleep on wet hair, make sure your hair is completely dry before you go to bed. It is also recommended to wrap your hair together or gently tie it up to prevent tangling.

Hair care products: Use a good (leave-in) conditioner to keep your hair soft. Don’t over do it. To much conditioner or any other hair care product can cause a build up and tangling. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol. Alcohol makes hair dry. Ask your stylist what would be the best products for your hair.

Hair treatments: Don’t perm, color or any other chemical process to your own hair extensions. Let your stylist take care of that.

In general it is better not to brush synthetic hair and keep this hair away from all sources of excessive heat. Your stylist knows your hair type, ask हिम/her what is best for you and how to take care of your hair extensions.

Finding Remy Indian Hair!

Indian hair extensions are here to stay and are increasing in popularity and style. More and more women are turning to extensions for that glamorous look rather than the daily maintenance of their own natural hair. In this fast-paced society, it is so much easier to add and remove hair for different occasions and seasons. No matter what the reason you may have for getting extensions, one thing holds true: You want quality, you want it natural looking, and you want tangle-free Remy hair.

Indian hair has traditionally been considered the ultimate hair for wigs, weaves and a variety of extensions. It is know for being strong, durable, and most important, easy to mange. Remy Indian hair has qualities that make it perfect for long lasting applications. Real virgin Indian hair is perfect for styling , and, because it is virgin, it can be customized to various colors. If purchased though a reputable distributor, high quality Indian hair is can be exquisitely beautiful! So have fun styling and coloring your new perfect Indian hair.

Indian hair is collected from community temples in India where women may give their hair as an offering: in much the same way Christians pay tithes. It is common for Indian women to donate hair many times in their lives. Donations most often occur before a major life event, such as marriage or the purchase of a new home. The temple then sells the hair at an auction. The money raised is used to help people in the local community. If you were to ask a woman in India what happens to her hair after she offers it to her temple, she would likely not know.

Finding good Indian Remy hair can be difficult a times, and many distributors just want a quick sale. Some distributors get the Indian hair as cheap as they can and sell it fast before checking the quality of the hair. Do some research before buying. Good Indian hair can last for years if properly take care of, but can be expensive. Purchasing quality Indian Remy Hair should be considered a long term investment. If you spend $65 for two packs of hair, 8oz worth, for a total of $130, that hair may last 2 months. In one year, you will have spent at least $650 on that hair. However, a one-time purchase of $250 on 8oz of Indian hair will last for a year; five times longer than the cheaper hair, which is a savings of $400 per year. Not only that but the Indian hair will look much better and more natural then the $130.00 dollar hair.
